The Test of English as a Foreign Language is used to assess the English language capabilities of non-native individuals wishing to enrol in English-speaking universities. The test is designed and administered by the Educational Testing Service, and is similar to IELTS tests.
The TOEFL is completed online and we have provided details of the structure of the test below.
TOEFL Reading Tests
This section will present you with 3-4 passages, each approximately 700 words in length. You will then be asked a series of questions on each, which can include filling out tables or completing summaries. The number of questions range from 12-14 and you will be allocated 60-80 minutes to complete it.
TOEFL Listening Tests
This section presents you with 6-9 passages, each 3-5 minutes in length. You will only hear each passage once and you will be expected to answer questions afterwards. You are allowed to take notes whilst you listen, and may refer to them when answering the questions. The number of questions range from 5-6 and you will be allocated 60-90 minutes to complete it.
TOEFL Speaking Tests
This section consists of six tests; two independent and four integrated. The independent tasks require you to speak your opinions on a familiar topic. The integrated tasks will require you to answer questions on the back of information you have been provided with. You will be evaluated on your ability to speak spontaneously and express your ideas clearly and fluidly. Your responses will be digitally recorded in order to be assessed and scored. You will be allocated 20 minutes to complete this section.
TOEFL Writing Tests
This section measures your ability to write in an academic setting and consists of two tasks .The first task requires you to read a passage relating to an academic topic and then listen to a speaker discuss it. You will then be asked to write a summary about the key points raised by the speaker and explain how they relate to the key points of the passage. The second task requires you to write an essay that expresses your opinion or choise, and explain it. You will be allocated 50 minutes to complete this section.
